Film Review: The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey

Hi Blog Readers,

This is a film review by me about Peter Jacksons new film ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ which is an adaptation of the novel named ‘The Hobbit’ by author J. R. R. Tolkien. I don’t want to ruin the experience for others and I haven’t yet read the book so I cannot make a comparison which the film and the book.

Overview: The film starts at the very beginning of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ with Bilbo Baggins writing his novel about his past adventures which see’s Elijah Wood revisiting his role as Frodo Baggins, I found this a great start to the film and really set the scene with familiar faces and surroundings.
The adventure then begins 60 years before ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings’ where Bilbo Bagins is approached by Gandalf to join him and a company of thirteen Dwarfs on an adventure to help them reclaim their home the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon ‘Smaug’ and for the lead dwarf warrior ‘Thorin Oakenshield’ son of ‘Thráin’ the dwarveen king to complete his side quest of defeating ‘Azog the Defiler’. After much hesitation from Bilbo as to whether to stay in his warm Hobbit home under the ground in ‘The Shire’ he signs a contract in order to join the company, is known as the burglar and starts his journey.

Review: I thought the film was incredible and charming, I felt immersed back into ‘Middle Earth’ as if I never left the shire, bag end, Gandalf, dwarfs, orcs, elfs, Gollum and it gave me goose bumps. Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins with perfection and its hard not to love all of the thirteen dwarfs especially Kili {Aidan Turner} aka the handsome hot dwarf. With a lot of action based epic moments, those dwarfs really get into trouble a few times throughout their adventure its touch and go. There were a lot of funny moment such as where Bilbo meets Gollum again he was more insane then I remembered but very funny! I also enjoyed all the cut scenes where you get to meet new characters such as wizard ‘Radagast the Brown’ and his cute woodland animal friends. From watching the first instalment of The Hobbit I know now why Gandalf is officially known as the ‘disturber of the peace’ said by Frodo in The Lord of the Rings!!

{ I thought the film was incredible and charming, I felt immersed back into ‘Middle Earth’ as if I never left the shire, bag end, Gandalf, dwarfs, orcs, elfs, Gollum and it gave me goose bumps. }

I saw the film at the new IMAX screen at Nottingham Cineworld which brought middle earth to life even more and you could see every detail, I wasn’t sure if it was the 48 frames per second but I couldn’t tell a difference. The film was about 3 hours but it didn’t feel like it as there was so much action, so much to see and it was lovely to hear another epic score by Howard Shore. Also the beginning sequence where the Kingdom of Erebor  was shown in all its glory, reminded me a little of ‘Ironforge’ from ‘World of Warcraft’ I’m such a geek but my partner agreed.
Overall, the film was incredible with amazing score, excellent acting and attention to detail from the crew. The adventure has left us with The Lonely Mountain in sight, I feel I want to watch more and look forward to the next two films in the trilogy.

I rate it {★★★★★} 5 out of 5 stars and I would see it again at Cineworld and buy the DVD when it comes out.
